The inmates of overloaded District Jail of Sialkot have been faced with a many problems as the 150-year-old jail has a capacity of only 722 prisoners but over 2,301 are imprisoned there.

Every summer season and unbearable loadshedding of electricity add to their miseries. Most of the relatives of the prisoners complained regarding the torture of jail police officials on the prisoners in their barracks in Sialkot jail. They alleged that the jail had become a torture cell, detailing that five inmates died mysteriously in the jail during the last year. The jail officials denied the allegations, and said that their deaths were natural due to ailment.

According to Jail Superintendent Abdul Aziz, the jail was overcrowded as the prisoners belonging to Narowal district were also present there. He said that 140 death sentences had been awarded to convicts including two females and 100 foreigners and are present in the jail among a total of 2,301 inmates.

SCCI DIRECTS ITS MEMBERS: The Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) advised its members to get polio vaccination certificate before applying for visas abroad.

In a notice issued here, the SCCI said that some of its members failed to get foreign visas due to absence of polio vaccination certificates. It directed the members to get certificates to avoid inconvenience.
