The educational institutions of Chunian, where crime is being promoted and education on the decline, have been posing serious threats to the future of students.

It is learnt that in most of the colleges, the educational environment has been destroyed as the students not only fail to complete their degrees but also enter in the arena of crimes after practicing the same at the college level.

The students of these colleges extort money from public service transports in the name of Jagga tax, forcibly take food items from nearby shopkeepers and also commit rapes and heinous crimes. Character building is an important part of education. It is assumed that in educational institutions, not only the education is imparted but the character is refined too. However, in year 2014, more than 17 rape cases involving college students were reported in different police stations of the district.

The situation is even alarming when it was found that there are some gangs operating in these colleges some of them having support of political persons and the others are backed by a few teachers. One such Tafu Gang being operated by a teacher was busted recently when its members were found forcing transporters to pay extortion monthly in front of a college.

Talking to this scribe, Ch Muhammad Ashraf, a student of associate engineering at Govt Technology College Raiwind Road, said, “Not only we (students) but also the administration are helpless in front of these gangs.” Public at large and parents of the students have demanded immediate disciplinary action in the educational institutions to restore a peaceful and conducive educational environment in these colleges.
