ISLAMABAD   -   Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday acquitted former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in Senate video scandal case due to unavailability of evidence.

In its short order, the ECP said that there was no evidence found against Senator Yousaf Raza Gilani in the video leak scandal of Senate elections.

A three-member bench held hearing under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, Shah Muhammad Jatoi and Nisar Ahmed Durrani.

After this, the ECP directed the Islamabad District Election Commissioner to take step against Ali Haider Gilani, Faheem Khan and Captain (R) Jamil for their involvement in corrupt practices.

It must be noted here that the ECP had reserved its judgement in the case a month ago.

It stated that the ECP has dismissed the PTI petitions against Senator Gilani. However, it further stated that no proper evidence has been presented before the commission. Moreover, the petitions were filed against Yousaf Raza Gilani by four PTI leaders including former federal minister Farrukh Habib, Maleeka Bhukhari, Kanwal Shozab and Alia Hamza.

In the video that surfaced on social media, Ali Haider Gilani was allegedly instructing PTI MPs on how to waste their votes during the Senate elections. It is noteworthy to mention here that PTI lawmakers had tried to stop the notification of successful candidate on Islamabad general seat Yousaf Raza Gilani who defeated PTI former finance minister Hafeez Sheikh.
