ISLAMABAD -Executive District Officers (Health) are responsible for complete failure of polio campaign at grass root level and they must be hold accountable, Health Minster Sherry Rehman told the Senate on Friday. "New threats of polio virus are coming from Tribal Areas, Afghanistan's border, Northern Areas and Afghan refugees camps. According to report, as many as 8,825 children were not immunized mainly in Tribal Areas due to opposition of some extremist people who have a misconception about polio drops that it causes infertility and impotence. They are spreading ideology against polio drops among the people," She informed the Upper House while replying to supplementary questions. The Minister said that as many as 41 cases of Polio were reported during last two months. She said that Executive District Officers (EDOs) have miserably failed to deliver polio vaccine at grass root levels. She said that a total of Rs 232 million has been utilized for polio vaccine.     She told the House that during last two years nine foreign agencies handed over $132.96 million while on the other hand Health Ministry during the last five years spent an amount approximately Rs 3379.61 million for purchasing polio vaccine. "We have to conduct some legislation about monitoring and campaign against Polio," she urged. The Minster said that her ministry had requested frequently to the provincial governments to play role to make polio Campaign successful. She said that lady health workers at district and council levels could play a pivotal role in the campaign. She said that the foreign donor agencies including WHO, World Bank, UNICEF, Japan, GAVI and others supported Pakistan for Polo eradication during the year 2007-08.                 About the Hepatitis disease, the minster said that as many as 12 million people have been affected form Hepatitis C. She said that the government has established screening diagnose centers under the directions of the Prime Minster. She said that it is dire need to create awareness among the people about Hepatitis disease. The opposition members severely criticized on the appointment of Muhammad Salaman Faruqui as Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission at heavy salary more than 2 lakh. Lt General (r) Muhammad Zubair is Executive Director of Planning Commission and he is getting basic pay Rs 2,25,000, utility bills Rs 11,250, HRA RS 95,000, medical facilities as admissible to government and car facility 1600cc. They said that on one hand people are committing suicide due to poverty while on the other hand some bureaucrats are enjoying perks and previliges.
