LAHORE - General Secretary Pakistan Peoples Party, Jehangir Badr on Friday said that party has finalised the name of party Co-chairman, Asif Ali Zardari as its presidential candidate and there was no possibility of his withdrawing the nomination papers under any pressure. While addressing a news conference here at Lahore Press Club along with party's Punjab Secretary General Ghulam Abbas, the PPP leader said that party's central executive committee has finalised Asif Zardari's name as presidential candidate, and there was no truth in rumors that he would withdraw from the race at the last moment. Badr said country needed a president with international stature and recognition, and Mr. Zardari was the only candidate who fulfilled this criterion. He lamented that a smear campaign had been launched against PPP nominee by anti-democratic forces to spoil his credentials. To a question, he admitted the role of international mediators in the resignation of Pervez Musharraf, saying some friendly countries were contributing a lot in consolidation of democracy in Pakistan. He said party has planned countrywide celebrations to mark the anticipated success of party chief Asif Ali Zardari as President of Pakistan. He said a malicious propaganda campaign had been initiated against the PPP to derail the democratic process. Certain forces, he said, were trying to create political mess with the underlying objective of hindering completion of final phase of transition to democracy in the country.   He believed that the process would get completed with election of Asif Ali Zardari as President of Pakistan. Jehangir said that resignation of Pervez Musharraf was a historic event in the sense that for the first time in country's history an elected government forced a dictator to relinquish power in favour of the parliament. Replying to a question, he said that all judges including Iftikhar Muhammad Ch would be restored in due course of time. He also criticised senior party leader and President Supreme Court Bar Association Aitzaz Ahsan for what he called provoking the lawyers to tear apart the pictures of Asif Ali Zardari and other party leaders.  He said party workers have been asked to observe restrain, otherwise they were ready to give a tit-for-tat reply.
