LAHORE – City police captured a rickshaw driver shortly after he threw out a dead body from his three-wheeler and tried to escape from the scene in the Bhatti Gate area, police said on Wednesday.

The rickshaw driver, identified as Muhammad Jameel, along with his accomplice, Samma, was trying to flee after throwing out a dead body of a woman from the auto on the road when policemen reached the spot. The policemen arrested both the men, gave them a good thrashing and later put them behind the bars in the police lock-up.

The driver told the police investigators that a Sub-Inspector Rahmat Ali of the Railways Police Shahdra had handed over the dead body to him and asked him to throw it somewhere. Police said Samma, the accomplice of the rickshaw driver, was a private employee of Rahmat Ali.

The police have removed the dead body to the morgue for autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. It is still unclear whether the woman, unidentified so far, was murdered or the cause of her death was natural. The police are investigating.

Also, Investigations Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested during a successful operation five notorious gangsters carrying head-money worth hundreds of thousands of rupees.

SSP (Investigations) Babar Bakhat Qurashi told reporters that the names of the arrested gangsters were included in the police black-book and they were wanted to the police in dozens of cases of heinous crimes, including 15 cases murders.

The officer further claimed that the police also recovered a huge cache of illegal weapons from their possession. The arrested criminals were identified as Zafar Iqbal alias Pappu, Karamat Ali, Awais Ali, Asad Ullah alias Asad and Mahboob Alam alias Cheena. Further investigations are underway.
