The Guanagzhou Institute of Energy Conservation, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Agriculture Faisalabad will jointly work on biomass in the area of energy to cope with the energy crisis and promote clean energy.
It was discussed at a meeting held at the VC Chamber. The Chinese delegation headed by Chuang Zhi Wu, the president of GIEC, called on UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan. The initiative is being taken under the auspices of Punjab CM’s campaign to promote green energy in the country.
The other members of Chinese delegation included Dr Hai-Bin Li, Yui An Liou and Sun Youngming. Faculty of Agriculture Engendering Dean Dr Muhmmad Iqbal and Faculty of Agriculture Dean Dr Muhammad Arshad were also present.
Chuang Zhi said Pakistan had tremendous resources in biomass that can be used for overcoming the energy issue. He said that work with the educational institutes will help to produce valuable researches and help promote clean energy. He said since the inception of GIEC in 1978, many cooperative and exchange programmes have been developed with around 40 universities, scientific institutions and enterprises in 17 countries and regions. He said that the organisation is working in solar, clean energy, biomass, solid waste, industrial energy conservation, geothermal energy & heat pump, water & air treatment, and heat chilling.
The vice chancellor said that the country could produce electricity from biomass with agricultural and animals wastes. He was of the view the university is actively working on the energy projects. The UAF in collaboration with Apolo Ltd has initiated 3.8 megawatt solar power plant to promote clean energy. He said that biomass projects, being simple in its nature, were close to rural culture which would specially facilitate farmers.
Dean Dr Muhammad Iqbal said that the UAF’s new programme of BS Engineering in Energy will help produce a trained manpower to address the issue of power shortage in the country. He also briefed the delegation about the possible avenue of joint work in the area of bio gas and bio energy. Dr Muhammad Arshad said that Pakistan has the potential to produce heavy quantity of energy from biomass. He briefed the delegation about the scope of biomass in Pakistan. Dr Hai-Bin Li and Sun Youngming also briefed about working on clean energy in China. They stressed the need for promoting the technology in Pakistan.
