The Wall Street Oscar winner has been spending time in the south of France with his friend Jean Pigozzi and is due to fly out to the Deauville Film Festival in northern France this week, according to People magazine.
Michael, 68, was introduced to Catherine, 43, at the festival in 1998 and they married two years later, going on to have two children, Dylan, 13 and Carys, 10.
His Liberace film Behind The Candelabra is due to open Deauville on Friday.
The stars were revealed to have separated earlier this week, although neither star has filed for divorce. A spokeswoman for Catherine said: “Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage. There will be no further comment.”
Catherine, 43, shot to fame in Britain in the early 1990s playing fresh-faced Mariette Larkin in the television adaptation of HE Bates’ The Darling Buds Of May before making her breakthrough in Hollywood as Elena Montero in 1998’s The Mask Of Zorro. The actress has spoken openly in the past about her struggle with type two bipolar disorder and checked into a facility for further treatment earlier this year.–EP
