Life lost to gamble

LAHORE - A chicken seller set himself ablaze after he lost Rs10,000 to gambling in North Cantonment, sources in police said on Thursday.
The family of Baowala resident Shahzad Salamat told police that he took Rs10,000 loan from a relative for his chicken shop.
Instead of investing in the business, the man went to a gambling den, where he lost the money in a few minutes, the police heard.
Lahore Operations Police Chief DIG Muhammad Tahir Rai suspended Guldasht post head over public complaints that cops were patronising the gambling den. An official said the DIG also ordered a probe into the matter.
ACCIDENTS
A youth was killed when his motorcycle bumped into a donkey-cart in Kahna, police said.
A resident of Valencia Town, Faheem Hassan, was on his way home from college when he had the accident. The only brother of four sisters, Faheem, sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he died. An eyewitness told the police that the collegestudents were performing stunts on their motorcycles, when the accident took place. However, the police have launched investigation after registering a  case.
Separately, a 50-year-old man was crushed to death by a van in Shahdara. According to police, the deceased, identified as Muhammad Sultan, was crossing the road near the Shahdara railways station when a recklessly-driven van ran over him, killing him on the spot.
Eyewitnesses captured the driver and handed him over to police. Police have registered a case and started investigation.
The traffice police have launched a drive to raise awareness among people to ensure road safey but to no avail.
