LAHORE – As many as 30 female players of the Punjab University Sports Department were awarded scholarships for their national and international performances here in an awarding ceremony at the department’s ground on Thursday.

Vice Chancellor Punjab University Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran was the chief guest on the occasion. Attiya Mumtaz and Shamsa Hashami were also present there.

The VC also gave away trophies to the captains and managers of the PU female teams for winning the four Intervarsity Tournament Trophies in handball, hockey, badminton and rowing.

The scholarship amount of Rs 3000 to 8000 and trophies were awarded to the winners of different events.  Shamsa informed that there were 30 scholarships for the year which were now being raised to 52 prominent players while two Suzuki Bolan cars were also awarded to the department.

She further informed that 25 students were given free accommodation while around 41 were given fee concession and now on the recommendation of the VC, two Chinese coaches in athletics and wushu will be joining the department to train the students.

At the end, the chief guest apprised of the efforts of the players and revealed the measures he has taken for the promotion of sports and streamlined the finances of the university.

He also urged the government to reserve at least four percent of the total budget for just education.
