KARACHI - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists on Monday staged protest demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC) against the alleged killing of the party worker in police custody.

A number of PTI workers along with the body of the party worker gathered outside the KPC and chanted slogans against the police department.

They alleged that the PTI worker namely Nazir Ullah was detained by the law enforcers including police and Rangers and he later died due to brutal torture in police custody at Pirabad police station. The PTI local leaders demanded the government to take stern action against the police officials involved.

Later, the protestors tried to move towards the Red Zone where law enforcers stopped them and tried to negotiate with the PTI leaders but the charged workers showed resistance and tired to move towards the Supreme Court Sindh registry. Resultanlt, police started baton charge on the protestors and dispersed them.

In a statement, PTI Karachi president Ali Zaidi condemned the shelling and baton-charge on the PTI protestors. He said it was regrettable that on one side, our worker Nazir Ullah died under police custody and on the other, the protesting party workers were tortured by the police. Terming the incident a symbol of state terrorism, he said deprivation of the people from their due right to protest was a slap on the democratic system.

PTI leaders demanded the Sindh chief minister and Sindh IG to arrest the police personnel involved in the killing of PTI worker. Ignorance of the authorities would force the party to stage protest drive. “We will hold the provincial government and the police department responsible for any untoward incident,” he vowed.

Police declining the PTI allegation claimed that victim Nazir Ullah was found in unconscious condition from the roadside in Orangi Town. Police shifted him to hospital where he died during treatment. Police further claimed the body did not have any mark of torture or other injuries.
