ISLAMABAD Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Friday, threatened to move Supreme Court for stay if the PPP-led government did not scarp the dubious Rental Power Project (RPP). Unveiling a White Paper on the Rental Power Project, PML-N central leader MNA Khawaja Asif at a press conference alleged the Rental Power Project was the biggest-ever fraud in the history of the country, as it would raise the power tariff by 28 percent. He was of the view that subsidy being provided on electricity bills to the tune of Rs300 billion would also increase to Rs370 billion. He alleged the government had created artificial power shortfall in the country to justify Rental Power Project. PML-N leader alleged that the government was set to award contracts of eight Rental Power Plants to its favourites while a contract for generation of rental power from 700 Megawatt to 800 Megawatt had been awarded to Walter Company. PML-N would leave no stone unturned in persuading the government to scrap the project , he said, adding, Otherwise, we will approach the Supreme Court in this regard. Khawaja Asif said that 43 percent electricity was already being generated from furnace oil and with the installation of Rental Power Plants only 7 percent power would be generated. This would also increase consumption of furnace oil, he added. He said that Rental Power Plants were installed on temporary basis but in Pakistan they are being installed for five years. Such precedence exists nowhere in the world, he alleged. Referring to a statement of the Federal Minister for power Raja Pervaiz Ashraf that oil and gas shortage too was contributing to shortfall in power production, Khawaja Asif asked wherefrom the minister would acquire oil and gas to run the plants. To a question, he said that payments for rental power plants had been made from non-banking sources.
