KARACHI - Odds on favourite Army won all their pool matches on the opening day of the two-day Inter Departmental Rugby Championship here on Saturday at the rain soaked outfield of PNS Karsaz ground. The soldiers showed great team work in defeating their respective opponents. Imran Arshad of the Army was outstanding. The tournament is being organised with the collaboration of Pakistan Rugby Union, Navy and the Sindh Rugby Association. The Inter-Department Rugby Championship is featuring five departments namely Army, Pakistan Police, Wapda, Railways and Navy. Some great matches with teamwork as well as individual performances were witnessed by the crowd. Police, Army and Wapda are in the run for the title. Army look to be favourites even though none of the players have made the national sides they have a very experienced coaching staff with Arshad who recently did IRB Level II coaching course who is great at motivating his players to achieve more. Army always play disciplined rugby. Results of first day: Police lost to Railways 0-17, Army beat Wapda 19-5, Police beat Navy 19-7, Wapda beat Railway 26-17, Police lost to Army 0-45, Navy lost to Railways 7-26. Pakistan National team scouts will also be on hand to search for talent for the national team and development squad in preparation for Asian five-nations later this year.
