KARACHI: Sindh Rangers today announced the arrest of Uzair Baloch, the ring leader of the Lyari gang war and chief of the proscribed People’s Aman Committee, from the city’s suburb before he attempted to make an entry into his old fiefdom to reclaim his ‘lost land’.

Baloch, who is facing several cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion and kidnapping and other criminal charges, was taken into custody by the Sindh Rangers while he was returning to Karachi by road soon he returned to the country from Dubai.

A source, however, said that the gangster had been brought to Pakistan a few months back but his arrests had been kept disclosed as investigators were working on clues and information provided by him during his interrogation.

According to Rangers, they arrested Baloch during a targeted operation on the night between Friday and Saturday and weapons were also recovered from his possession. Murder, attempt to murder, extortion, kidnapping for ransom and terrorism cases have been registered against him in Kala Kot, Chakiwara, Napier and Baghdadi police station.

Baloch, who founded the PAC on the basis of his political backing by a top political party, became symbol of terror in Karachi. When the PPP government proscribed his party, Baloch rebelled against the PPP government and went into underground but continued his murderous activites.

Baloch had fled the country following the launch of an operation in Karachi by the federal government against criminals and target killers in 2013. The Sindh government had also fixed a head money on Baloch. Due to non appearance in the court, his red-warrants have also been issued.

Interpol had arrested him on December 29, 2014 while he was proceeding to Dubai from Muscat, Oman on fake documents. Later, a four-member team comprising DSP Zahid Hussain, SP Usman Bajwa, SP Naveed Khawaja and Rangers officials were sent to Dubai to seek his extradition but the team failed to bring him back.

It has not clear whether Baloch was brought back by security agencies or he returned to the country on his own. The source said that the government and security agencies were using him as a trump card to lay hand on suspects who have remained associated with him. The source said that Baloch was wanted to the police in 20 cases of terrorism, murder, extortion, kidnapping for ransom and other cases.

Uzair Baloch was presented in front of Sindh High Court today. He was presented in Anti-Terrorist Court in front of Judge Farooq Shah.

According to media sources Rangers asked for 90 days remand for Baloch, which was granted by the court. The court has also given permission for JIT.

He is being accused in numerous cases of murder, abduction, target killing and extortion.

Uzair Baloch is considered to be the top entity in Lyari Gang War. He is also the head of People’s Peace Committee which is a sub-organization of Pakistan People’s Party.
