PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has recently stated that the Lal Masjid deal was sabotaged at the end. He says everything had been agreed upon at one point of time but things were ruined at the last moment. He says things would have been very different if his government had resigned that very night. The past cannot be undone now. Ch Shujaat should realise this issue could not have been solved through negotiations as the miscreants were always making new demands whenever the prospect of an agreement drew near. The PPP government should never have allowed the meeting commemorating the first anniversary of the Lal Masjid to take place. Many inflammatory statements were made in that meeting by participants in clear contravention of the article 19 of the constitution. This cannot be tolerated and concerted steps should be taken to reform institutions that are run on the same lines and curriculum as the now defunct Lal Masjid. -SADIA BUTT, Peshawar, via e-mail, July 14.
