KARACHI - Provincial minister for Local Governments, Agha Siraj Durrani, said on Wednesday that he would protest against MQMs threatening statements and also bring such statements to the notice of the President and the Prime Minister and Core Committee of the two parties. It seems that City Nazim has no contact with the MQM members of the Core Committee hence he had gone to the court to settle the dispute, Durrani said while briefing after a meeting. He said that Core Committee was formed to sort out differences and disputes among ruling coalition partners, adding that contradiction of a recent statement of the city nazim was also issued. The Minister further said that all the four provinces had agreed that present local government system should be abolished forthwith. As soon as President Zardari approves, we shall amend the Local Government Ordinance through provincial legislature and then administrators will head the local governments, he added. Durrani continued that LGs fall under provincial governments but a dictator, in a closed-door meeting, imposed another system that delivered nothing on the ground despite spending billions of rupees on fake development schemes. He said that action would be taken against revenue officials who had allotted land in Hawks Bay for warehouses/godowns and this land would be reserved for journalists colony. Inquiry into the corruption of all the corrupt nazims will be conducted. Corruption cases of union council nazims are being referred to the anti-corruption department, he said. The minister further said that presents nazims would complete their terms between August 14 and September 7. After that, government officials will be appointed as administrators to run the local governments for one year, he said. He cited that conditions in the NWFP and Balochistan and in some parts of Punjab were not conducive for local government elections hence elections would have to be delayed there. We shall try our level best to hold local council elections in Sindh at the earliest possible, he said. Answering a question, he said restructuring of the finance department by the City Government and up-gradation of the posts of some of its officers was an illegal decision and it would be reversed. He added that only the Chief Minister has power to upgrade any post therefore the upgraded officers would be downgraded to their original positions. Durrani further said that orders were issued for a probe into the corruption of nazims and local government officials in many districts, talukas and union councils of the province. He added that taluka nazims of Larkana and Nawabshah, union council nazims of Thari Mir Wah (Khairpur), UC Kajrari (Umerkot) Nazim, UC Nazim Bolhari and the District Government Badin were among those who would face corruption charges for bogus development works. Corruption cases against nazims of Union Council Janhan Soomro and UC Setharja have been referred to the anti corruption department, he said, adding that inquiry into other cases would be conducted by the Sindh Local Government Commission. The minister also rejected the criticism on non-Sindhi senators from the province and said that PPP believes in serving the masses without any discrimination. APP ADDS: Sindh Local Government Minister Agha Siraj Durrani Wednesday said, no one has right to allot official land expect Chief Minister. He said, the Sindh government would take action against what he termed illegal allotment of land, encroachment on official lands and other land use/allotment violations in Karachi.
