Lawyers kick off second phase of movement

LAHORE - To give vent to their anger against former dictator Pervez Musharraf as well as PCO judges and to express solidarity with restored judges of the Supreme Court for summoning former dictator for his Nov-3 unconstitutional steps, the lawyers on Wednesday observed Accountability Day by taking out rallies and not appearing before courts. Obviously, with observing 'Accountability Day the lawyers have kicked off the second phase of their movement. However, it is yet to be seen whether this time their top leadership would be bale to mobilise them to the extent that they could garb another victory. This is for the first time that the lawyers took out rallies since the restoration of independent minded judges in March. It has been lawyers demand from day one that the 'judges who pledged allegiance to a dictator on and after November 3 not only be removed from judiciary but also tried under Article 6 of the constitution as accomplices of Musharraf. In provincial metropolis two rallies were taken out at The Mall by Lahore Bar Association and Lahore High Court Bar Association. Prior to rallies both bar associations held their general house meetings and passed resolutions demanding trial of former president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf for subverting the Constitution. After the meeting, the lawyers of LBA started their march from Aiwan-e-Adal while chanting slogans against the former dictator and in favour of independent judiciary. On reaching GPO Chowk, Mall Road they were joined by the lawyers of LHCBA who then started joint march towards Chairing Cross, Punjab Assembly Chowk. Lawyers of LBA were led by their President Rana Zia Abdul Rehman while Justice (retd) Nasira Iqbal and Muqtadir Akhter Shabbir were leading the lawyers of LHCBA. The participants of the rally were holding placards and banners in their hands that remained chanting slogans former military dictator demanding his trial under Article 6 of the Constitution. After staying for half an hour at Assembly Chowk the lawyers returned to their respective bars peacefully. During the rally one side of The Mall remained blocked for traffic while a heavy contingent of police was deployed at the rally route to cope with any untoward incident. However the rally remained peaceful. Earlier addressing the general house of LHCBA, lawyers also demanded to hold accountable former Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar as well those whom he administered oath of their respective offices Nasira Iqbal said the lawyers had defeated the establishment and now legal community would not allow anyone to subvert the Constitution. Secretary Supreme Court Bar Association Shaukat Umar Pirzada said that the lawyers would foil all conspiracies against independence of judiciary. Raja Zulqarnain, Shafqat Chohan, Nisar Safdar, Allah Bakhsh Gondal, Ms Shamsa Ali, Malik Munsaf Awan and Ch Mohammad Anwar Ghuman also spoke on the occasion.
