A lot to hide

Dina Jaffar in her letter titled 'The silence is broken' (The Nation June 14) says the President has nothing to hide. She must be a very gullible person. Musharraf has continued to hide the real reasons for reference against the Chief Justice - to clear the way for his reelection from the present assemblies in uniform. The Chief Justice may have ruled that to be unconstitutional, hence the reference. The same apprehension, of an adverse Supreme Court judgment, made him impose the Emergency on November 3, which he himself admitted to the BBC, to be 'unconstitutional'. He is also cleverly hiding his role in destabilizing the PPP/PML-N coalition at the centre and the PML-N government in Punjab. Would Dina Jaffar please tell me why he has appointed Salman Taseer, an arch rival of Nawaz Sharif, as Governor of Punjab. She was probably too young to remember when Benazir Bhutto appointed Chaudhry Altaf Husain as Governor of Punjab for exactly the same purpose. -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore Cantt., via e-mail, June 16.
