Shahbaz warns against embezzlement

LAHORE (PPI) - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that Food Support Programme is a revolutionary step of his government which is aimed at provision of financial assistance to the people living below poverty line and billions of rupees have been allocated for this welfare project. He said that provision of every penny of relief amount to the deserving persons is the responsibility of government and the process of distribution of financial assistance is being reviewed for ensuring further transparency. He directed that recommendations should be submitted to him within five days for making this process foolproof. He said that embezzlement of even a single penny of financial assistance for destitute persons will not be tolerated and the guilty persons will be taken to task. He was addressing a high-level meeting held at Chief Ministers Secretariat, here Monday to review the system of distribution of financial assistance under food support programme and removing the flaws in the system. Member National Assembly Shah Baligur Rehman, Chairman Task Force, SA Hameed and Samiullah Chaudhry, Coordinator Rao Tahir Musharraf and Waheed Alam Khan, Chief Secretary, Secretary Commerce and Investment, Commissioner Lahore Division, Post Master General Punjab as well as senior officers concerned were present. The Chief Minister said that welfare of poor and service to the humanity is the mission of the present leadership, therefore, food support programme and sasti roti scheme have been launched in the province for indigent and destitute persons. He said that complaints regarding irregularities in the distribution of financial assistance under food support programme will not be tolerated and a foolproof system will be adopted for this purpose. He said that if any one is involved in embezzlement of financial assistance he is not only usurping the rights of the poor but also committing a grave sin. He said that billions of rupees have been distributed among poor persons under food support programme while the next instalment will be released in the first week of July. He directed Chief Secretary to submit recommendations for evolving a comprehensive and foolproof system of distribution of financial assistance after reviewing all aspects of the process. He said that distribution of assistance through direct cheques to the deserving persons or ATM as well as other options should be looked into. He directed Post Master General to take effective measures for checking any irregularity in the distribution of next instalment of amounts of food support programme and all complaints regarding the postman should be addressed at any cost. He said that no effort should be spared in this regard as it is a noble cause. The Chief Minister further said that the main purpose of food support programme is rehabilitation of the poor persons on permanent basis through imparting of vocational education to the children of these families for their self-sufficiency. He said that the officers concerned should pay attention to this aspect of rehabilitation programme and evolve technical education programme for the children of enlisted families. He directed Secretary Information Technology to review the particulars collected for food support programme with the help of NADRA. The Chief Secretary informed the meeting that comprehensive recommendations will soon be presented for removing flaws in food support programme and elected representatives will also be consulted in this regard.
