Chief secretary, IGP discuss polls security strategy

LAHORE - Punjab Chief Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani called on Inspector General Police Syed Kaleem Imam at the Central Police Office on Friday.

The chief secretary while speaking to senior police officers on this occasion said that free, fair and transparent elections are the prime responsibility of the caretaker government. He said that the district administration and the police should perform their duties with dedication and utilize all their potential to maintain law and order during election.

Chief Secretary further said that leadership of Punjab Police includes able and dutiful officers who are capable to produce best results. He said that transfers and postings on large scale in civil and police departments have been made across the Punjab in order to make process of election impartial.

On this occasion, Punjab IGP Syed Kaleem Imam vowed that Punjab police are fully alert and ready to hold transparent election in the province peacefully. He said that the code of conduct issued by Election Commission of Pakistan will be implemented at any cost.

The police chief said that comprehensive strategies are being devised under supervision of RPOs and DPOs in order to provide security during election campaigns, processions and on the polling day. He said that display of weapon and aerial firing during election congregations, corner meetings and scaremongers in public will be dealt strictly and officers who commits negligence or mistake in this regard will not be spared.

Meanwhile, IGP Syed Kaleem Imam while talking to RPOs through video-link conference said that no individual would be allowed to keep armed gunman with him without seeking prior approval from district intelligence committee and there will be no delay in taking action against the violators.

He said that if any candidate needs to keep gunman with him then he requires approval from district intelligence committee. After the approval from the committee gunman of fair character attested by respective police station may be allowed. He directed the officers that all available resources should be utilized for security of more than 6000 sensitive polling stations and deployment of elite force with patrolling of commandos should be ensured.

Efficient patrolling system of Dolphin, PERU and other forces should be ensured in busy areas of election activity. He also directed the police to ensure best coordination with officials of other relevant departments. He also directed RPOs that to ensure effective security of women polling station and required number of women professionals should be recruited in special force.

 IG Punjab further said that during the election campaign, ban on wall chalking, and ban on broadcast and publication of hate material should be ensured.

Effective implementation of amplifier act and tenant registration should also be ensured, he added.
