RAWALPINDI - Rasm-e-Qul of the slain reporter of daily TheNation and Waqt TV Raja Assad Hameed was held on Sunday at his residence in Shamsabad. Federal ministers, senior journalists, politicians, his colleagues, members of civic society and people belonging to all walks of life participated in it and offered fateha for departed soul. On the occasion, Federal Minister for Information & Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira, Federal Minister for Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistanis Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, former Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman, PPP Secretary Information Fozia Wahab, CPNE President and Editor TheNation Arif Nizami and President PPP Rawalpindi Aamir Fida Paracha were among those who Fateha for the departed soul. Arif Nizami expressed his deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Raja Asad Hameed and termed it a loss not only of his family but also for the entire Nawa-i-Waqt group. Talking to Assad's brother, he announced a special compensation amount of Rs 100,000 on behalf of the organisation for the widow and job for one of his family member in Nawa-i-Waqt group he also assured all possible help to the bereaved family. He said the organisation would remain in close contact with the widow and daughter of the slain reporter and if they felt need of any help any time the Nawa-i-Waqt group would provide it. Kaira also expressed his profound grief with the bereaved family of Raja Assad Hameed on the occasion and assured government's support for the family announcing a compensation amount of Rs 300,000 on behalf of the government. He said the government would look in Assad's murder and the culprits would be soon brought to justice however he advised the journalists to avoid thrilling reporting. He said the killers of Raja Assad have close connections with the terrorists who assassinated the PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto who was killed in the same city. "The government can understand the feelings of the bereaved family as we passed through the same like situation after BB's assassination," he further said. He said President Zardari and Prime Minister had taken an immediate action after the killing and asked the quarters concerned to hold a special and judicial inquiry into the murder of Raja Assad. Special investigation teams have also been constituted to probe the murder, he said adding "Government would leave no stone unturned to apprehend the real culprits." "I assert on his fellow journalists to help the investigation teams by revealing them the information regarding his journalistic career and his writings which were published in newspapers," he added. Sherry Rehman also visited the house of Assad Hameed and offered Fateha. Talking to the journalists she said that the killing of senior journalist in bright daylight was condemnable and the country was under a constant threat of terrorism. However, she paid rich tribute to the brave journalist.Fozia Wahab also expressed her sorrowful feelings with the widow of Assad and assured her the government's full support to her and her daughter. She also said that she would take personal interest in allotment of plot for Assad's widow. Meanwhile, Zahid Kazmi, Pirzada Rahat Quddusi, Dr Farrukh and others visited the Assad's house and offered Fateha for the departed soul.
