LAHORE - PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif has welcomed President Asif Ali Zardar's address to the joint sitting of the Parliament, saying it will strengthen democracy in Pakistan. "We welcome the reconciliation policy of President Zardari, as the harmony among the political parties would strengthen democracy," Nawaz said. He said if the Charter of Democracy (CoD) was implemented, extending hands of friendship toward Zardari had not been an issue. The PML-N Chief headed the consultative meeting held at his Raiwind residence on Sunday that deliberated the details of statements of President Zardari during his presidential address, its prospects and situation about Punjab government. The meeting that continued for more than four hours was attended by former Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Raja Zafrul Haq, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Khawaja Asif, Ishaq Dar, Ch Nisar, Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa, Rana Sanaullah, Khwaja Saad Rafiq, in addition to a large number of MNAs, MPAs and party officer-bearers. The meeting mulled the possibilities about the physical appearance of Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif in review petition against disqualification case if need be. The participants also discussed the chances of forming government with PPP in Punjab regardless of the court decision expected to come in coming days. As the meeting did not give any idea about the nomination of any member of provincial assembly for stopgap CM in Punjab testified the fact that PML-N had been assured by government that larger bench decision would restore the February 24th position of Punjab government, political experts say. Talking to mediamen after the meeting, Chaudhry Nisar said that the country had been passing though a critical time. He said that today leadership consulted the party leaders about present political situation. To a query, he said, "PCO court decision was illegal and unconstitutional. However, now we have faith in present judiciary. We believe that decision of court will revoke the disqualification against Nawaz and Shahbaz and would restore February 24th position in Punjab." PML-N Punjab president Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa also held a press briefing flanked by Rana Sanaullah and Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman and said that decision regarding the shape of Punjab government would be taken by taking top-to-bottom review of the emerging situation. Regarding question about the substitute of leader of the house if PML-N succeeds in clinching the government back in the Punjab, he said that it was premature to say anything unless court decision came. He called Zardari's announcements as hopeful, saying: "We expect and closely watch that how and in what manner these announcement would be implemented." He said that Nawaz and Shahbaz might appear before court if needed. He hailed the goodwill gesture of the PPP, saying the next arrangement in Punjab government will be in the wake of situation developing. About forward bloc, he said the bloc claimed to have swelled to 43 numbers in Punjab Assembly and if they wanted to have association with PML-N, "what we can do." The unification bloc was never facilitated during PML-N government in Punjab nor after its suspension and even now, he said in reply to a question. Khosa said whatsoever the court decided, leadership would fix the line of action. Rana Sanaullah said that meeting sought suggestions from party leaders regarding announcements of President Zardari. He said the PML-N had fallen a prey to PCO courts and hoped that justice would be delivered. Answering a question, he said that both options regarding formation of Punjab government with PPP and without PPP were still open. Later on, Malaysian High Commissioner, Ahmad Shizan called on Nawaz Sharif at Raiwind. On the occasion, Nawaz said that by getting the judiciary restored the first step toward the goal has been achieved and now focus is on strengthening other institutions. Nawaz said that terrorism was a global issue and efforts were afoot for stamping it out. He said that economic cooperation with Malaysia was very much valued. Former speaker Punjab Assembly and PML-Q leader Afzal Sahi accompanied by his son Zulqarnain Sahi called on Nawaz Chief at Raiwind. He appreciated Nawaz's role in the restoration of judges and underlined the need for unification of Muslim League.
