LAHORE-Three policemen including a Sub-Inspector (SI) were gunned down in Samanabad area on Saturday night in what appeared to be a terrorist attack, police said. This incident occurred at a police picket near Shadab Chowk backyard of Khizra Mosque in Samanabad police limits at about 12:15 am. The deceased police officers included SI Tahir Ashfaq and constables, Sanaullah and Akhlaq. Police investigators said two armed men riding on a motorbike were on their way when some police officers deployed at a picket at Dongi Ground signalled them to stop. 'The terrorists sprayed bullets on police contingents seconds after they realised the police wanted to stop them, Muhammad Riaz Sherazi, a resident of Samanabad Roundabout said. Sherazi further said he saw three police officers falling on the ground while unknown assailants managed to flee from the crime scene. The others locals of the area also maintained that even a single bullet could not be fired from police party during the firing of the terror suspects. Panic gripped the area soon after the news spread about the casualties. Police investigators said the victim policemen were discharging their duties at the aforesaid check post on routine basis. Policemen Tahir and Sanaullah received almost 20 bullets and succumbed to injuries on the spot. Third constable Akhlaq ,however, was rushed to Mayo Hospital where the doctors also pronounced him dead. A top police officer told The Nation apparently it seemed a terrorist attack. Meanwhile, heavy police contingents cordoned off the locality with no arrest till filing of this report. No FIR was registered while further investigations were underway.
