LAHORE Pakistans No 1 tennis player Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi won his first round doubles match at the French Open to progress to the second round. Partnering with Rohan Bopanna of India, Aisam overcame Fabio Fognini of Italy and Michael Russell of the USA 6-2, 6-3. Qureshi and Bopanna dominated the first set after securing an early break of serve at 2-1. After going up 3-1, the Asian duo never looked back. They secured another break of serve at 5-2 to seal the set 6-2. Aisam and Bopannas domination looked set to continue into the second set and they were holding their own service games well. The first break of serve in the second set came when Aisam and Bopanna broke Fagninis serve the way they had in the first set and took the lead 4-2. This time, however, their opponents struck back and did so immediately. Bopannas serve was broken in the very next game and the set brought back on serve at 3-4. Aisam and Bopanna were unfased by having their serve broken for the first time in the match and they responded in the best possible way. Russells serve was broken to make the score 5-3 and here, Aisam served out the set and the match. In their next round, Aisam and Bopanna will face the 15th seed French pair of Julien Bennetau and Michael Llodra. Aisam is also participating in the mixed doubles event with Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan and the pair are scheduled to play their first round today (Saturday) at approximately 19:00 hrs PST.
