Following his usual policy towards Muslims which is promise them a lot, do nothing to help them and keep attacking one Muslim country after the other, President Barack Obama has again expressed hope that a two-state Middle East solution is possible. He also strongly advised Palestinians to return to negotiations with Israel and strongly warned them, in the same tone as Israel did it, against seeking recognition through UN in September, 2011. Now, Mahmoud Abbass government has been negotiating with Israel for a long time, without any progress, because of the negative approach of the Israeli leaders who have been encouraged to adopt this attitude by the unqualified support from the US leaders and lawmakers in addition to the extreme timidity displayed by Barack Obama while facing Israeli leaders. The good-for-nothing US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who does some tough-talking in Pakistan, in response to humiliation and insults hurled by Israeli leaders on the US officials, proudly announced that ties with Israel are unbreakable. With such staunch backers, there is no wonder the Israeli leaders feel no need to yield on any point in their talks with Palestinians. As for American 'commitment to Middle East peace, they even prepared the roadmap for peace, as well as Annapolis conference, according to which a Palestinian state would have been established some years ago. However, the first statement that the then Israeli prime minister made after the conference was that he is not bound by the time frame, and he did exactly that. Palestinians are now quite fed up with the meaningless negotiations which Israel uses only to gain time to create more 'facts (settlements). No wonder, US special envoy for Middle East, George Mitchell has resigned in despair whereas not only useless but positively harmful representative of the quartet, Tony Blair is continuing. New York Times published a good article on May 24, titled Netanyahu Gives No Ground in Congress Speech by Helene Cooper and Etham Brommer. The very title gives a clear indication of the Israeli approach while the contents of the articles as well as the comments on it explain the rest of the story and show clearly how 'sold out the US leaders and their lawmakers are to the Israeli 'cause. Barack Obama would do well to read the articles and the comments instead of advising Palestinians to start another round of meaningless talks with Israel. S.R.H. HASHMI, Karachi, May 27.
