ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani is likely to make a change in the federal cabinet soon after which the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting may be handed over to former Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira. Source within the PPP informed this scribe on Tuesday that the party leadership is seriously thinking to replace Information Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan with Kaira, who is currently working as the party spokesman. It is pertinent to mention here that the PPP-led federal government since 2008 has changed three senior members of the party who were appointed as Federal Information Minister. The Prime Minister had appointed Sherry Rehman as information minister, however, she resigned as minister in March 2009 reportedly after some differences with the party leadership on imposing restrictions on media. Later, Kaira replaced Sherry and remained on the portfolio till February 2011. During the period, he had also been running the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas while he was also Acting Governor for Gilgit-Baltistan. Later, the PPP leadership took back all the portfolios from Kaira. The third appointee was Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan who took the portfolio of Ministry for Information this year and was still running the affairs of the ministry. This particular change, the sources said, might be a result of Dr Firdous Ashiq Awans statement during the last session of the National Assembly. She had stated during the question hour that the MD PTV was not under her control after which the Prime Minister while responding her in the House said that being the head of the ministry she has the authority to run the affairs of the PTV. Gilani also said that if the minister has some problem in this regard she can share it with him privately.
