LAHORE - The speakers at a seminar stressed to eradicate extremism from society through educating masses and creating awareness about it through media.

The need is to mitigate emotional elements through talk shows and media outlets.

The Hameed Nizami Press Institute of Pakistan (HNPIP) organised the seminar titled: “Effects of Growing Extremism in Pakistan—Media Responsibilities” at HNPIP Auditorium near China Chowk, Majid Nizami Road on Thursday.

Former Federal Shariah Court Chief Justice Mian Mehboob Ahmad presided over the session while PML-N Central leader Siddiq Al-Farooq and PPP leader Naveed Ch were the chief guests. Israr Rana addressed on the occasion as well.

Mian Mehboob while highlighting the background and causes of extremism also gave a solution to the problem. He said the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) can help reduce the threats of extremism. He said media should play role to curb it.

Mehboob also criticised the past foreign policy that supported a superpower to trounce the other and the result was extremism. He said that the decay of the only superpower was decades away. The other element for extremism in the world over, he said, was the Jewish lobby that wanted terrorism besides control of economy, media and dispelling any efforts for inter-religion harmony.

All the political parties should work to eradicate extremism from the society. Social workers and philanthropists could also help promote the cause of extremism, he added.

Siddiq Al-Farooq criticised misuse of the blasphemy laws and those who themselves interpret the laws were extremists. Farooq said Islam defends rights of children, women and even trees. Naveed Ch said media had not play positive role to lessen elements of extremism from the society.

The speakers besides giving background of extremism discussed its causes in the society. They were of the view that the policies of the past governments were mainly responsible for the present situation.

Earlier, Absar Abdul Ali gave a detailed introduction of the subject. He said the religious institutions meant for unity, divide the society. Media without proper monitoring had failed to discuss matter in national interest.
