ISLAMABAD - The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage on Wednesday discussed the matter of taking news channels off-air by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority during Faizabad operation.

The meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Pir Muhammad Aslam Bodla and it unanimously confirmed the minutes of its previous meetings held on 25th October, 2017.

Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb condemned the act of taking off-air all the news channels, but stated that the action taken by ministry was imperative and the committee could be briefed in-camera with all the facts and figures, if required. The committee considered “The Redistributive Land Reforms Bill, 2017” (moved by SA Iqbal, MNA) and deliberated that the subject bill is not related to the committee and decided that the bill may be deferred until its next meeting.

The committee also deliberated on the Installation status of new TV boosters by the PTV and inquires about the delay in the completion of projects, it was briefed to the committee that the delay was on the part of the contractors; therefore the committee recommended that the inquiry may be conducted against the persons responsible for the delay.
