KASUR-Sale of dead meat is at its peak across Kasur city and surroundings allegedly with the connivance of Livestock officials, it has been learnt.
A survey conducted by The Nation reveals that the butchers, taking advantage of health authorities’ negligence, are selling dead meat at every nook and cranny of the district without let or hindrance. With the alleged backing of Livestock officials, the practice is being carried out with impunity.
During the survey, people belonging to different localities said that butchers have established slaughterhouses inside their homes where they allegedly keep meat of the dead animals in water.
“The meat consequently gets weight by absorbing water and thereafter, it is sold at exorbitant prices in the market,” they alleged. They added that the butchers have allegedly forged official tags which they fasten to the meat to portray the commodity they are selling as fresh and hygienic. They flayed butchers for neglecting public health in craze for making big money.
They also criticised the Livestock officials who, “what they alleged”, receive ‘monthly’ from butchers for ‘issuing them permit’ to play havoc with public health.
They said that people have reportedly been falling victim to meat-borne diseases due to consumption of dead meat . They regretted that they have submitted numerous complaints to the authorities concerned but no action has so far been taken against the accused. “It seems that the officials and butchers have teamed up to spread diseases among people,” they added.
They demanded Deputy Commissioner Saira Umar and health authorities look into the grave situation and order the officials concerned to launch a ruthless crackdown on the butchers, selling dead meat . They also demanded stern action against the officials responsible for backing, what they called, “butcher mafia”.
