Fear stalks the land

All of us are watching activities of the terrorists. Each day they are doing something that proves their existence and creates fear of the unknown among the people. Hundreds of citizens have died in their brutal attacks. This has created immense security issues as well. Movement from one place to another has become a problem. Despite all the checkposts and declarations of 'tightened security, terrorists are still able to strike whatever they want, whenever they want. The common man is suffering, the industry closing down. The business community is, naturally, disheartened and it is no surprise that investment is declining all round. The educational institutions are closed after the bomb blast at the International Islamic University, Islamabad. How long are we going to close our eyes like an ostrich to this grim and grave disaster? We need awareness that terrorism is terrorism against us all. It discriminates neither between rich and poor nor the ruler and the ruled. It is a problem that needs to be understood as common and crucial, so crucial that it is above all our priorities. The situation demands that government, political leadership and people from all tiers and walks of life should come forward and unite to fight back against it. How long are we going to see the walls of our offices and educational institutions splashed with blood? Today, is the time when each one of us should feel the religious and emotional bond and do whatever we can do in our capacity as citizens to fight this menace? -ANWAR PARVEEN, Lahore, October28.
