SHERGARH - Highway robbers made off with hundreds of thousands of rupees, cellphones and other valuables besides smashing the windowpanes of a car with gunshots. On the other hand, the Shergarh Police SHO was busy enjoying a 'Mehfil-i-Mushaira' here the other night.

As per detail, as many as 8 armed robbers blocked the Shergarh-Renala Road near Glasgow stop with trees and looted various people traveling on the road. In the first incident, Sakhi Muhammad, a resident of Arifwala was on the way to Renala Khurd with his family in a van.

The dacoits intercepted the van, held the family hostage at gunpoint and looted Rs25,000, gold ornaments worn by the women and other valuables. Then they stopped a truck of a milk dairy farm and deprived the inmates of Rs90,000 and cellphones.

In the third incident, they stopped a rickshaw and looted Rs1,500 from its driver Muhammad Mansha and cash and cellphones from rickshaw passengers Zulfiqar, Hameed, Muhammad Akram and Ali Sher. They also opened fire on a black 2oD car to stop it and smashed its windowpanes and back screen. But the driver speeded up and succeeded in escape the scene.

Meanwhile, people staged a protest demonstration against the rising highway robberies in front of the City Press Club and alleged that Shergarh Police SHO Nawab Dogar was patronizing the dacoits.

They said that it had become a set pattern that robbers loot the masses whenever SHO was busy in private meetings.

"They looted the people on the road twice in the previous month when the SHO was busy enjoying a "colorful dance party" as chief guest and now they have looted again when he was there at a Mehfil-i-Mushaira last night".

They appealed to the Punjab IGP, Sahiwal RPO and Okara DPO to take notice of the police negligence and replace the corrupt SHO with some honest and conscientious police officer.
