LAHORE - PML-Q leader Raja Basharat claims that Local bodies’ polls would be nothing but mere selection if the controversial sections of the Punjab Local Government Act 2013 are not removed.
Addressing a news conference here at Muslim League House on Tuesday, he said that the LG Ordinance should have been improved instead of repealing it, as it aims at establishing the real local governance system. He said the judiciary and Election Commission of Pakistan have also directed the Punjab government to address the issue of disputed sections of the Punjab Local Government Act, 2013 in a bid to establish real local government system. He added that illegal procedure has been adopted for converting towns in the union council.  About the ongoing delimitation process, Basharat claimed that the officials engaged in this connection don’t have the powers to form new union councils. He maintained there was no representation of the local government in education and health departments. He said that provision of direct election for women of villages and indirect election for women of the cities was a decision, which was not understandable.  Replying to a question, Basharat said the PML-Q would fully participate in the local bodies’ elections, while they would also forge alliances with likeminded parties.
He said if the local bodies’ elections have to be conducted by the ECP, then the delimitations should also have been done by it.
