Plight of consumers

The distribution companies LESCO, MEPCO, FESCO etc have been issuing inflated electricity bill to the consumers and forcing the consumers to pay extra bill. The consumers complaints are not redressed by the officials and whenever their bill additional amount is deducted by the SDO of the area concerned that amount is being included in the up coming bill in next month. Hundred of thousands of consumers are at the mercy of the meter readers and the linesmen and their super visors officials. The divisional officers are responsible to collect the revenue of area under them. The meter reader usually notes extra reading of 500 to 1000 units and then cunningly adds the amount in the bills of consumers who are honestly paying for their power consumption. Now a number of consumers are demanding the prepaid meter to be installed at their residence or meter reading cards so that they can know the exact reading and the bill that is due. But it seems that no body in the distribution companies at any level really cares much about consumers. This is all due to the monopoly of electricity distribution companies, which are owned by the government. What we in Pakistan confront today are the problems generated by bureaucratic inefficiency, widespread corruption and bad governance. ENGR. S.T. HUSSAIN, Lahore, September 28.
