LAHORE -  Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) unanimously elected Javed Kayani as chairman on Thursday. Kayani has served the association as its provincial chairman (Punjab zone) for two terms.

The association also elected Ahsan Latif as provincial chairman (Punjab Zone) and Nauman Ahmed Khan and Ahmad Ali Tariq were elected as executive members of PSMA Punjab Zone.

Talking to reporters after his election, Kayani pledged to work closely with all stakeholders – government, consumers and sugarcane growers – for overcoming sugar shortage in the country and keep its domestic consumer prices at a reasonable level. He said he would also work to improve public image of sugar producers who were wrongly blamed for shortages and profiteering at the expense of the consumers.

He said the sugar industry was a national asset and provided jobs to tens of thousands of people besides contributing to the growth of the agriculture sector.

The newly-elected chairman, who will resume the charge on Oct 1, reiterated to work with commitment and dedication and assured the participants that he would continue to make all-out efforts to solve the problems currently being faced by the sugar industry.

The spokesman of PSMA said that in terms of Memorandum & Articles of Association, Chairman of PSMA Centre is elected on rotational basis, as it was turn of Punjab Zone.
