William Shakespeare speaks through Mark Anthony on the assassination of Julius Caesar in one of the most quoted speeches in English drama; Friends Romans Countrymen, lend me your ears I have come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them The good is oft interred with their bones So let it be with Caesar The people are in no mood to hear anything good about Mr. Musharraf. He apparently would be remembered for his military coups, fraudulent referendum, repeated breaches of constitution, war on terror and the judicial crisis. His attempted defense of his deeds and policies in the farewell speech might never be accepted. Those who remember the exit of General Ayub and ZAB would also recall the bitterness at the time in eyes of the man on the street. Neither the green revolution of the general nor tall claims of the master politician were ever mentioned. Hundreds of thousands who attended the funeral of General Zia were made irrelevant when Zia's legacy got defeated in the elections held only a few months later. The government of BB was dismissed twice amid charges of corruption but not a tear was shed by people. Nawaz Sharif's two-thirds majority melted in thin air when he was handcuffed and humiliated but none of his millions of voters ever came out. People rejoice in the fall of mighty and remember them only for their misdeeds. -DR FUAD SHAFIQ, Lahore, via e-mail, August 21.
