Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said the government with its current focus on poverty alleviation and curbing price hike was committed to addressing the masses problems in accordance with the PPP manifesto and mission of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.Our focus is now on poverty alleviation and price hike. The initiative of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) also focuses on the vulnerable segment of society, the Prime Minister said while talking to UAE-based PPP office bearers, workers and media representatives here on late Sunday night. Prime Minister Gilani, who had a brief stay in Dubai before proceeding to Libya for participation in the 40 years celebrations of Al-Fateh Revolution on the invitation of Libyan leadership, apprised PPP office bearers of the governments multi-pronged policies to address the various challenges facing the country. He said security and economic development are the two major challenges faced by country and the present PPP led government was utilizing all resources to tackle these issues by taking all the political forces on board. The Prime Minister in this respect referred to the recent successful military operation in Swat and Malakand Division and said the officers and Jawans of Pakistan Army and other security forces laid their lives for the defense of their motherland. He said the PPP government by following the philosophy of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto put the foundation of political reconciliation in the country and now all the major decisions were being taken with consensus. The Prime Minister said a parliamentary committee for constitutional reforms has been formed, which will soon finalize its recommendations to resolve the issue of 17th Amendment and 58-2B. He also mentioned the abolition of centuries old FCR law and other reforms measures in the Federally Administered Frontier Areas (FATA) by the present government as a major step forward to bring the people of those areas in the mainstream. Similarly, the Prime Minister said, the cabinets approval of Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self-Governance Order 2009 will empower and provide autonomy to the people of Northern Areas. He said the government was also fully cognizant of the energy crisis and short-term and long-term measures are being taken to address this issue. The Prime Minister said the Overseas Pakistanis are an asset for the country, as they are not only contributing to the countrys economic development but they have always been at the forefront to help save their motherland during various challenges. He assured the PPP office bearers and workers that the government will do all to address their issues, adding, he will direct the federal and provincial ministers as well as the chief ministers to help address the problems of Pakistani expatriates. The Prime Minister stressed on the need of re-organizing and further strengthening the party in UAE and said he will talk to party Co-Chairman and the President Asif Ali Zardari to constitute an executive committee of the PPP in UAE for strengthening and promoting the party in UAE. Responding to questions by media persons, the Prime Minister referred to his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in Sharm El Sheikh and said the two sides had agreed in principle that the dialogue is the only way forward for both the countries. He said Pakistan desires good relations with all neighbors including India on the basis of equality and dignity. To a question about defaming of politicians by certain elements, the Prime Minister said the politicians should demonstrate political maturity and thwart such conspiracies. About trial of former President Pervez Musharraf, Gilani said all the political forces should play their role in strengthening the countrys democratic institutions so that no dictator could think of such actions in future. If the parliament and institutions will be strong, no one would dare to take such actions, he said. Minister for Privatization Syed Naveed Qamar and Ambassador at large Javed Malik were also present.
