The Supreme Court's order, restricting movement of heavy traffic and trucks carrying containers on the roads of metropolitan Karachi until 10 o'clock at night is being observed these days but more in defiance than compliance. The result is that not only do we get the horrifying traffic jams but there are daily occurrences of fatal accidents on the roads. This is a nightmare for the people. A few days back, an entire family of a lady doctor with her husband and two small children were crushed while driving down the ICI Bridge when a container kept unchained on a truck against the rules broke loose and fell upon their car. In another recent accident, a 50 years old man, the sole bread-earner of a family of four, was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a fast moving dumper truck on M.A Jinnah Road. On the same day, a young boy was crushed to death under the wheels of a speeding bus in DHA Phase I. Unfortunately all these ghastly accidents have occurred in broad daylight. Those driving can see that despite the ban imposed by the Apex Court, heavy vehicular traffic is now once again on the roads in Karachi on a killing spree. To the utter disgust of public, the officers standing on traffic signals simply look the other way as the violators carry out their criminal activities with great audacity. -A. K.
