LAHORE - Another sexual harassment scandal involving airhostess Anila Haroon and first officer (FO) Farrukh Bhatti of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is being investigated by the Women Protection Committee (WPC), an independent body of the PIA. Sources in the PIA said Monday that the WPC after looking into the issue would submit its report to the Airlines Management that would take further action in the light of that report. First Officer Farrukh Bhatti holds membership of the Pakistan Airline Pilots Association (PALPA) that has now got into the way of free and fair inquiry of the incident. The airhostess had alleged (that) FO Bhatti beat and sexually harassed her during her official stay at the Pearl Continental Hotel Rawalpindi. The FO recorded his statement before the WPC a few days back and again on Monday (August 30). I have been acquitted of all the charges laid against me by airhostess Anila. The WPC has declared me innocent, claimed Farrukh Bhatti while talking to this scribe over the phone. PIA Spokesman Syed Sultan Haroon, however, maintained that the inquiry was underway and the WPC was still to release its finding on the sexual harassment case. If the accusation against the FO proved to be true, the PIA Management will take strict action against him, he added. Airhostess Anila Haroon in her application to the WPC said that on the day of the incident she flew from PK-300, arrived at Islamabad Airport at 8:55 am and from there she reached the PC Hotel Rawalpindi with the crew as per routine rules. I was given room number 318 for the official stay till the next morning as I was on the route PK-785 (ISB-LHR). After I checked-in, First Officer Farrukh Bhatti, who was already staying at the same hotel, asked me to come to his room, but I refused. He came outside my room and tried to break-in. He kept ringing the doorbell. I refused to open the door and called the reception for my security. Meanwhile, my luggage was brought up by the hotel staff and I opened the door to receive it. At that time, the FO forcibly entered my room, I asked the hotel staff to ask him to leave my room at once, and stay there for my security as he (first officer) was intimidating and harassing me. (After some time) the manager of the hotel came to my room. I asked him to provide me security as the FO was not leaving my room. The on duty manager asked Farrukh to leave the room on which he (became furious) and started hitting me in the presence of the manager. After beating me he left the room threatening me of dire consequences. The bellboy and manager of the hotel witnessed the entire incident. I am writing this application to you to take serious notice against the accused and assure my security. A PALPA office-bearer was also contacted who confirmed the inquiry and said if the accused FO was found guilty, the PALPA would not support him.
