ISLAMABAD - An important meeting chaired by Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Tariq Majid held at Joint Staff Headquarters on Monday took comprehensive stock of the floods as well as security situation in the country. The committee reviewed the recent flood situation caused as a result of heavy torrential rains and ongoing massive rescue and relief operations including initial restoration works being undertaken by the Armed Forces of Pakistan. The committee while extending heartfelt sympathies with families who had sacrificed their lives and lost their properties, expressed satisfaction over the prompt response of Army, Navy and Air Force who despite full stretch commitments in the effort against terrorism provided all out support to the flood affected areas in concert with National Disaster Management Authority and other government agencies. The committee also reiterated the resolve for continuing proactive relief and rehabilitation efforts with full national support till alleviation of the distressed and completion of flood operations. The committee also undertook a comprehensive review of the national security situation, taking stock of both external and internal challenges and the contemplated response. The deliberations specifically focused on the internal security issues, progress on effort against extremism and terrorism especially in Swat and FATA, reshaping regional dynamics including security situation in Afghanistan and developments along our eastern borders. Operational preparedness of the Armed Forces and other important aspects related to defence industrial production and joint control mechanism for coastal areas also came under discussion. The meeting was attended by Chiefs of three services including Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of the Army Staff, Admiral Noman Bashir, Chief of the Naval Staff, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qmar Suleman, Chief of the Air Staff, Secretary Defence, Secretary Defence Production, Director General ISI, Chief of General Staff, Director General Strategic Plans Division, Director General Joint Staff and other senior military officials from three services.
