LAHORE Three persons including a 12-year-old child died and 15 others injured when two passenger trains collided near Sabzimandi at Badami Bagh railway crossing on Tuesday morning. Railway police official Munir Ahmed Chishti said Khyber Mail coming from Karachi rammed into another Lahore-bound Babu train, which had already stopped at Badami Bagh station, killing two people and wounding 15 others. One bogie of Babu train and the engine of Khyber Mail were derailed, he added. He said a fireman of Khyber Mail and a passenger of Babu train were among the dead whereas three women sustained critical injuries. We have already ordered an inquiry into the incident, the official said. SP City Police Division Anwar Khitran along with his team appeared on the scene after half an hour. When the police approached, instead of assisting the victims, they started misbehaving with the commuters on the pretext of investigation, the passengers said. Earlier, according to the accounts of several eyewitnesses, a 12-year-old boy jumped onto the railway track when Babu train appeared on the scene in order to commit suicide. His legs were cut into pieces and moments later he died. Owing to this sudden incident, Babu train stopped without informing the Karachi-Peshawar bound Khyber Mail which collided with it, a railway officer said. According to an eyewitness, many passengers of Babu train seeing the coming Khyber Mail jumped out of the bogie. He said the driver of Khyber Mail also saved his life whereas his firearm and a passenger died on the spot. Rescue 1122 reached the spot and shifted the injured persons to Nawaz Sharif and the Mayo hospitals where five of the injured are stated in critical condition. A Rescue official said 12-year-old boy Abdul Ghafoor died on the spot whereas two persons succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
