Plea filed against LHC vacations

A writ petition was filed in the Lahore High Court yesterday seeking directions to end its summer/winter vacations and to extend working of judges for eight-hour a day.

Lawyers Foundation for Justice’s President Syed Feroz Shah Gillani filed the petition through Advocate AK Dogar. The petitioner submitted that long summer vacations in a developing country like Pakistan was unjust and tantamount to wastage of public time and contribution to laziness.

The petitioner stated that superior courts were also closed for winter vacations for more than two weeks ostensibly for the reason that Englishmen used to enjoy Christmas holidays.

He further contended that the Constitution guarantees expeditious justice and pendency of a large number of cases in the courts was an eye-opener demanding that the huge backlog be cleared and suffering people be granted justice.

He submitted that the principle of equality applied to all judges, lawyers and citizens. It was vital for judges to work for eight-hour a day sitting in courtrooms with a break of half an hour. The petitioner prayed to the court to declare summer/winter vacations as inconsistent with the fundamental right of expeditious justice and void.
