A hatchery of bribery

Leader of the Opposition, while talking to journalists outside Parliament House disclosed that 25-50 forms for employment in various government and semi-government services have been distributed to each MNA and MPA of coalition parties but not to his partymen. He said all parliamentarians were entitled to an equal share of seats in all government services and depriving this right to the lawmakers of his party was tantamount to breach of their rights. Hence, he said, he had decided to file a privilege motion in the House. Isn't the duty of the parliamentarians mainly to frame and pass laws for betterment of people? I think they are not supposed to demand development funds or recruit their friends and favorites in various services. This so-called 'quota' system is a relic of the past eras and against the spirit of merit, transparency, justice and those much-trumpeted claims of establishing supremacy of the law. It would have been more appropriate and dignified if the opposition leader had, instead of demanding share of seats in services, urged upon the government to abolish this undesirable and unjustifiable quota system which is nothing but a hatchery of bribery. -RAJA SHAFAAT ULLAH, Islamabad, via e-mail, December 22.
