Our collective failure

Reports are pouring in from different parts of the country about increasing incidents of violence against women. Unfortunately, successive governments could not do anything praiseworthy in this regard. However, the present government seems serious to deal with the problem. The Ministry for Women Development and the National Commission on the Status of Women must take some solid steps. First, the police should be turned into a pubic friendly force, espeically its women wing. Then the law and order situation must be improved because it is the atmosphere of general security within the country which results in violence against women. Most importantly, the women shuld be encouraged to report such cases. But this can only happen when the system starts functioning properly. It is believed that the above mentioned steps will go a long way to discourage acts of aggression against women. HASHIM ABRO, Islamabad
