KARACHI – The Karachi University’s International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Malaya (UM) to further develop academic and research cooperation between both the institutions in the fields of natural and biological sciences. The agreement was signed by University of Malaya Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ghauth Jasmon and ICCBS Director Prof Dr M Iqbal Choudhary during his recent visit to Malaysia. ICCBS International Research Coordinator Prof Dr Ahsana Dar Farooq and UM Dean Faculty of Sciences Prof Dr Mohammad Sofian Azirun were also present.As per the agreement, both the institutions have agreed to enhance relations between the two Universities and to develop academic exchange in the area of education and research, and have agreed to identify team members to work on joint research projects. As per the MoU, bi-institutional meeting will be held annually in the form of workshop/seminar/conference jointly organised by the parties. The spokesman of the ICCBS said that the University of Malaya was considered one of the most premier institutions in Malaysia, and the largest universities of the Muslim World. “The collaborative activities to be covered by this agreement may include faculty and research staff exchanges, study abroad program, collaborative research programs, including the exchange of voucher samples, and natural product extracts; joint seminars, workshops, and service programmes. This agreement will be in effect for a period of five years from the date of execution and may be extended by mutual agreement in writing by both parties. This agreement may be terminated by either party’s giving thirty days written notice to the other party. Each party will be responsible for seeking funds to support its involvement in the cooperative activities under this agreement, and all such activities will be dependent upon the budgetary appropriations of the parties,” he said.
