LAHORE - An accident was scarcely prevented at Allama Iqbal International Airport on Tuesday when the front wheel axle of a Boeing 737 belonging to a private national airline was damaged.

However, no injuries or other damages were reported on the plane that was enroute from Karachi to Lahore with 172 passengers. All passengers and crew were moved out of the aircraft to safety.

According to airport sources, the axle broke while the plane was gearing in for landing, after which the pilot took immediate precautions to halt any further movement on the runway and avoid additional damage. Domestic and international air-traffic remained suspended for hours at airport due to unavailability of relative machinery to move away the plane from the main runway.

The passengers and their families were reported holding protest and chanting slogans against the authorities for long delay in flights. Emergency was declared at the airport after the incident.

Rescue teams helped people out of plane. Runway was also closed because of the oil leaked from the aircraft.

A local TV reported that no representative of the airline was present at the airport while passengers expressed their anger on this carelessness. An investigation has been started to make a final report of the accident.
