“If the United States is going to get hit, it’s going to come out of the planning that the [Al Qaeda] leadership in the FATA is generating.”
–Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, June 2008.

Thankfully, there has been no coordinated attack by a terrorist organisation on American soil since this statement was issued. There have been many on Pakistani soil due to militants hiding out in FATA, and it would not be too far a stretch to say that the American people are safe because Pakistani people are the new target for terrorists in the region. Though we have a long way to go, there are bigger demons now in Iraq and Syria, that will pose a threat to the west. Pakistan has to a very large extent taken care of its terror problem, to the extent that networks here seem to have only the capacity to cause havoc locally, and rather than internationally. We can only be glad that irresponsible predictions by Americans, like the one quoted above, have not come to pass- though we have had to pay a heavy price for international security.
