LAHORE - Police launched a massive manhunt after a station house officer was shot and killed on the city’s outskirts yesterday evening.

Police officer Tajammal Hussain Butt was shot dead near an empty plot in DHA Phase-VII in the limits of Defense-C police station. The officer died on-the-spot. Lahore DIG (Operations) Dr Haider Ashraf told The Nation that police were working on two different lines. “It could be an outcome of dacoity-cum-murder. We are also investigating personal enmity as the possible reason (behind the gun attack),” he added.

The body was moved to the morgue for an autopsy and no arrest was made till late yesterday night.

A senior investigator said the officer was travelling in a private car along with some friends when two motorcyclists shot and killed him.

CIA police SP Muhammad Omar Virk told reporters in the evening that the victim was shot dead in a mugging attempt as he fought back bandits.

Investigators, last night, were struggling to ascertain what happened, at the crime scene, in fact. Investigations were also underway to determine why the Shadbagh SHO went to a deserted place on city’s outskirts without bodyguards.

It was learnt that Tajammal along with his two friends went to a town near DHA Phase-VII in plainclothes and in a private car. “Police are investigating what happened there? The friends of the officer are being interviewed by investigators,” a source close to the investigations said.

The SHO who was in his early 40s was regarded as an energetic officer in the police circles. Some colleagues of the officer were seen in tears outside the city’s morgue where a team of doctors were performing the autopsy.

“Anything at this stage could be premature. Three police teams are working separately,” a city police spokesperson said. He said police are alerted across the city and cops are searching for the suspects.

Police are yet to register the murder since investigators and forensic experts were working on the case till late yesterday night.

Senior police officers including DIG Haider Ashraf and SP Omar Virk also reached the spot soon after the incident.

Farther of three, Tajammal Hussain, was serving as head of the Shadbagh police station for the last couple of months. One of his children is as young as five-year-old.

Capital City Police Officer Muhammad Amin Wains last night constituted three police teams to unearth the killers. The teams of CIA, investigation, and operation are headed by an officer of the rank of SP.

The manhunt for attackers was underway till filing of this report.
