PESHAWAR - Kohat police on Tuesday arrested Saddiqullah Afridi, the co-accused in the murder case of medical student Asma Rani.
Saqibulla, the brother of the prime accused, Mujahid Afridi, was arrested by the police from Kohat, said District Police Officer (DPO) Abass Majeed Marwat while addressing a press conference here.
Marwat said that Saddiqullah was arrested after incessant raids by the local police. He said that his arrest was made early in the morning. The DPO said that the police have issued red arrest warrants for Mujahid Afridi to catch him with the help of Interpol.
He said that there was no political pressure on the Kohat police and soon the prime accused would be in the court of law after his extradition from Saudi Arabia. He said that the main accused had taken a ticket in advance on his Umra visa.
Meanwhile, residents of Lakki Marwat Sarai Norang, the neaighbourhood of the victim, staged a protest against the killing of Asma and appealed to the chief justice to immediately punish the accused.
They blocked the main road, demanding the arrest of the prime suspect. Talking to the media, the protesters hit out at the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Police Inspector General for his alleged negligence and question Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan where were the police when the accused fled the country.
On Sunday last, Mujahid Afridi opened fire on Asma Rani, a third-year medical student, while she was returning home from Abbotabbad after a session break from her college. The victim, who had refused a marriage proposal of Mujahid Afridi as he was already married, died later at a local hospital before naming the assailant.
The accused after committing the crime fled the country to Saudi Arabia via Benazir Bhutto International Airport Islamabad the same day.
