ISLAMABAD - A tug-of-war has started between Presidency and PM House over the holding of grand 'Azadi Show' on the eve of Independence Day by Pakistan Television, The Nation learnt reliably here on Wednesday. Traditionally PTV used to stage 'Azadi Show' at Aiwan-e-Sadar but this year Prime Minister wants that the grand function be held at PM House. The state-rn TV, therefore, stands awkwardly sandwiched between the highest institutions of the state and the government. According to well-placed sources within PTV, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani had asked PTV administration to hold 'Azadi Show' at PM House against the set traditions of the past of arranging the grand show at Aiwan-e-Sadar. "PTV Chairman received a letter from PM Secretariat to organize 'Azadi Show' at PM House this year about a week ago," the sources revealed. According to sources, PTV had started preparations in compliance with PM Secretariat directives when another letter from the Presidency asked PTV high-ups that the function be held as per past tradition at Aiwan-e-Sadar. According to sources, PTV received a letter from the Presidency on Wednesday (July 30) in which Presidential spokesman had asked state-run TV channel Chairman to hold 'Azadi Show' at Awan-e-Sadar instead of PM house. "PTV administration feels itself standing in difficult situation over the controversy that has developed unexpectedly over the holding of 'Azadi Show' this year", the sources added. It is pertinent to mention here that PTV Chairman/MD Dr Shahid Masood is off to US with Prime Minister, who, according to the sources, has been told about the letter of Presidency and the row that emerged over the issue. "Authorities of PTV are meeting today (Thursday) to mull the situation that developed after the letter of Presidency and to resolve the issue", the sources added. When asked, Presidential spokesman, General (R) Rashid Qureshi said that the correspondence between different state organs was confidential and needed not to be shared with media. He neither denied nor confirmed that Presidency had sent a letter to PTV Chairman for holding 'Azadi Show' at Aiwan-e-Sadar.
