CNG buses fail to lessen miseries of passengers

LAHORE - The non-air-conditioned CNG bus service launched as a pilot project recently in the City amidst scorching summer season has failed to satisfy the passengers as most of them complained that the project could not lessen their miseries, The Nation learnt through a brief survey on Thursday. The people were of the view that the bus-owners were over-charging the innocent passengers in absence of any officially approved fare-list. They said that the drivers and conductors of these buses were often seen misbehaving with the passengers. They added that CNG buses were more time-consuming as compared to diesel-run buses. The survey further revealed that no concession had been fixed for students while the CNG buses also observed no timetable for reaching or leaving a destination. The people termed this CNG transport as environment-friendly but in the same breath they maintained that neither these buses were comfortable nor up to the mark. The conductors of these buses are involved in over-charging from passengers and there should be a fare-list displayed to avoid over-charging, said Jamila, a woman passenger. She opined that there should be a female staff in the bus to deal with female passengers instead of only one conductor for both males and females. Another commuter, Shazia said that bus conductors behaviour with the passengers was quite harsh, even with females, which is very serious matter. She demanded the government to monitor the staff, and the performance of the new buses to provide relief to the public instead of multiplying their miseries. Fare of CNG buses should be less than diesel-run buses, but in this case the situation is altogether different, a male passenger, Ahmed Khan said. He also complained that CNG buses were slow moving vehicles and the passengers wasted lot of time reaching their destinations. He suggested that there should be a proper schedule for CNG buses that must be strictly observed to save precious time of passengers. When contacted the General Manger of CNG bus transport service, Mirza Irshad Baig said that the project had been launched recently and the registration of CNG busses was still under process. He said that they were waiting for the issuance of fare-lists from the Lahore Transport Company (LTC), and for the time being they were charging according to distance. We will display fare-list soon after it would be issued by the government, he maintained. He admitted that scuffles between conductors and passengers were taking place in the absence of fare-list. He informed that the management imposed fine on the conductor and driver in case of late arrival or over-speeding. He also claimed that all the staff of CNG busses was well-trained as they were recruited properly on-merit.
